The Palaces of Lamu

I don't think I will be able to explain the sheer beauty of Lamu. So here are some photos:

It seemed as if the world stopped for 5 days...The island had this fantastic combination of old and new. The town of Lamu began life as a 14th century Swahili settlement, but the island has seen many visitors and influences, including Portuguese explorers, Turkish traders and the Omani Arabs. It is just brilliant..

My new years eve was spent with the 7 others girls (2 from London, one Kenyan, one South African, one from Cali, one from New York, and my lovely sister) with whom I had traveled. We celebrated new years at the home of a new friend we had met on the island. His home seemed more like a palace then a home. And as the slightly eclipsed blue moon shone over the ocean we danced the night away to the sounds of one of the best DJ's in Kenya...

The following day we watched the annual sailboat race and I decided to enter the swimming race across the channel which was quite an adventure:) But at the end of it I ended up 4th and got a free t-shirt to remember it by, I love Lamu...

The following days were filled with sunset runs, boat rides, elaborate journal entries, long runs on the beach, and evenings of colorful characters, clothing, and cocktails...quite the combination..
